The Health Star Rating Calculator can be accessed in two different formats. The Calculator should always be used in conjunction with the Guide for Industry, which explains how the star ratings are calculated and provides important guidance, such as appropriate categorisation of products, how to determine the form of a food and the calculation of fruit, vegetable, nut and legume (fvnl) content.

The Calculator takes into account four aspects of a food associated with risk factors for chronic disease - - energy, saturated fat, sodium and total sugars content. Certain beneficial components of a food, such as fruit, vegetable, nut and legume content, and in some instances dietary fibre and protein content, are also considered.

Points are allocated based on the nutritional composition per 100g or 100mL, as used in the Nutrition Information Panel. The points are then converted to a star rating (from ½ to 5 stars). The Calculator should always be used in conjunction with the Guide for Industry to the Health Star Rating Calculator.

Note: the Health Star Rating Calculator generates a rating using information on individual ingredients that may not be included on the Nutrition Information Panel, such as the fvnl content. Calculating a rating without all the necessary information may produce an inaccurate result.

Note on using the Health Star Rating Calculator: When using either version of the Calculator, a decimal point must be used as a decimal separator, not a comma.
